What are our candles made of?

We are very aware of what ingredients we put in our candles to make sure they are the best. We use fully refined paraffin.

But wait! Isn’t “paraffin” bad? Shouldn’t I avoid it? Paraffin has always been a hotly debated topic in the candle-making world. But rest assured, the type of paraffin used for Catalyst Magick candles is Fully Refined Paraffin, which in most cases, is a food-grade paraffin with the same level of purity as the wax used to coat certain fruits, vegetables, and even candies.

And so the paraffin wax we use in our candles is not slack wax or scale wax – both of which are impure products that retain high levels of harmful chemicals left over from the oil refining process.

Finally, we use high-quality essential oils sourced from around the world. The same plant from different parts of the world can yield different results in magick, and so our candle do not use synthetic fragrances or even natural “like-smelling” fragrances.

The reason we use essential oils is that they contain the “essence” and natural qualities of the plant from which they were derived, making them a suitable replacement for the actual herbs that we need in our spells and magick candles.

That’s not to say that fragrance oil has no use in magick - if all you are trying to replicate is the scent for the purpose of magick, then it is fine to use natural fragrance oil, it’s just not what I need for my own candles.

Why are your magick candles made in Japan?

Some people have asked me why our candles are made all the way in Japan. When it came time to make our products in numbers, it took me a long time to find people who could make our magick candles in the right way. I looked all around the world and nearly gave up.

For starters, we must use non-toxic wax and pure essential oils. You might have noticed that there aren’t many pillar candles using pure essential oils on the market. This is because it requires special techniques and the truth is that many manufacturers struggle them and so it’s not really worth their effort.

The result is that that most mainstream candle producers only work with natural fragrance oils when creating pillar candles. However, by far the hardest requirement to fulfil is timing! Magick candles can only be made on the exact days we prescribe when the stars are just right - not one day before, and not a day after.

One day, a friend told me about a Japanese philosophy called “right the first time”, which encapsulates a zero-defect mindset aimed at achieving impeccable quality from the outset. The approach is crucial for ensuring high productivity, minimal waste, and accuracy. This was the final piece of the puzzle as this meant they could tune very specific colours which are significant aspects of magick. And so we went to Japan and finally found the right people to make Catalyst Magick candles.

We spent months perfecting all the colours of each and every candle before we settled on the outcome. What’s more is that I believe the universe sent me on this search to meet these people who also believed in the magick and willing to follow our unique steps, so that I could build real catalysts for magickal use.
